Autumn Equinox / Seasonal Rituals
As the autumn equinox approaches, day and night move toward balance. For a moment, the light steadies—neither fully summer nor fully autumn. The air turns crisp, leaves begin to let go, and the land exhales in slow preparation for rest. I feel that shift in myself too: a pull toward stillness, an invitation to gather in and ground.
Pouring tea, pausing for balance — an equinox ritual.
These are the small ways I move with the season:
Steeping in warmth. I hold a mug of mushroom cocoa, chamomile tea, or spiced cider between my palms. As the steam rises, I am reminded to pause, to slow my breath, and to feel present.
Changing textures at home. I bring out the flannel sheets, light candles at dusk, and settle into the meditative action of knitting, the warmth of yarn gathering in my hands. These small shifts carry me into the season, quiet markers of transition, almost like altars to autumn.
Walking with the land. I take the girls outside to gather leaves as their colors deepen each day. Pressed between the pages of a book, they become fragile keepsakes of a fleeting moment.
Balancing within. When I journal at this threshold, I ask myself: What am I ready to release with the fading light? What intentions do I want to carry into the darker months? The equinox reminds me to honor both what fades and what endures.
Ritual holds its beauty in the small, steady acts we repeat. For me, these practices are a way of remembering that I, too, am part of the turning earth.
As we move toward the equinox, I wonder: how do you mark this shift? What small ritual helps you pause, breathe, and remember the beauty of the season?
